Beautiful bird, OP. I was under the impression that WEBP was a bad format based off what I've read about its implementation in popular websites such as Bluesky and Instagram.
>>470 It can be if you don't know what settings to use. Bluesky is definitely a terrible implementation of Webp, probably using -m 1 and no multi-pass encode + low quality settings. At that point you might as well just smooth images with a blir filter before encoding them with JPG. When you do all the stuff in my OP it's not unusual to get more than 20-30% generic compression efficiency advantage most Webp tests show over JPG.
Also people often don't take into accoun that Webp was never designed to compete with archival quality (ie SSIM 0.9999). At that point you're wasting so much filesize for small quality improvements that image codecs in general don't compress well at all and JPG looks like a "winner" there.
