I've decided to make this thread to discuss what I've learned while trying to promote Umi Galaxy.
So far, I've noticed that visibility and clicks are important, but there's also a need to reach the right audience.
For example, yesterday I made a post on Reddit promoting the website on /r/webdev. The post got around 92k views and 200 likes, which translated into 200+ visitors to the website.
That looks pretty good, but none of those visitors actually engaged with the website in a meaningful way. Nobody posted on the imageboard, and nobody created an account.

Welp, at least it narrows things down a little. I tried to get 4chan interested with a lossless Webp thread and that just invited chaos.
There used to be many tripfags and anons there interested in site improvements but I guess they've moved on elsewhere for the most part.
I still think you should consider placing anime girl next to your logo, easier said than done since she would need to be memorable/unique/not copyrighted.
I know I joined because of proper Webp/AV1 support, I wanted more than a simple tripcode, and the captchas on 4chan were getting too annoying.

With 4chan it's harder to get views, but I feel like the users stick around more. Everyone once in a while I post there on threads that feel relevant.

I`m using this avatar as placeholder when guest users visit pages such as https://umigalaxy.com/flairs/quick-scan. I think the blue hair goes nicely with the umi/ocean idea. But it's still just an initial idea

Looks generic, needs more moe IMHO, there's relevant hairclips to consider as well. Maybe even red/light blue eye heterochromia. Some kind of "wow" factor.
Though this is going to be your mascot not a group project so keep that in mind but I do feel that without something like this you'll only get lurkers.
My next suggestion is we go fishing in altchans to try to recruit but the list has been growing for a while: https://allchans.org/
Good news is they allow submissions there, you should consider making one, it might help a little: https://allchans.org/request-addition/
What to post for recruitment is really tricky, post the wrong tone or make it too shill-y and it's going to piss people off. Webp related...
Maybe some kind of indirect posts referencing things people might want like Webp/AV1/less annoying captcha or finding relevant threads to join.
